But they're not really the trials. Only two girls will be eliminated. The rest will go to a camp run by Martha Karolyi, Olympic coach, and she will pick the team. So am I wasting my time watching it tonight?
I always root for the underdog, which in this case, is the older girl. Older, meaning the ripe old age of 20. Alicia Sacramone is vying for a spot after falling off the beam at the 2004 trials.
The women's gymnastics probably should be called girls' gymnastics, since most of them are 15-16 years old. The men are "men".
I miss the old 10-point score. Remember all the perfect 10's Mary Lou Retton scored back in '84? The new scoring system is better, though, because it awards points for higher degrees of difficulty.
These poor girls really punish their bodies. When I see them flip around on the balance beam, my feet start to hurt!
At any rate, I'm looking forward to the introducing Ethan to the Olympics. Lindsey and Caleb won't care, but I think Ethan will like watching the different contests and skills.

Oh, April LOVED the summer olympics in 1996...gymnastics especially. She was barely 2 1/2 then. She would get in one corner of our living room in our tiny apartment, throw her hands up in the air and wait on the girls onscreen to do a tumbling run on the mat. She'd run full speed and dive on the couch which would put her little feet nearly over her head. She thought she was tumbling.
Thanks for reminding me of that...these are the things we forget after so many years. And how big our kids get, so fast.
